NorthStar Advanced Exercise Science Releases Strength Calibration Protocol Free for Public Use
Free, system-agnostic weight selection protocol gives home exercisers and professionals a structured way to choose safe, effective loads across all major push–pull movement patterns.
Within each category, users or trainers select their own exercises (for example, a dumbbell bench press for upper push or a goblet squat for lower push) and record attempts across high, mid, and low repetition ranges. For each rep range, up to 5 attempts can be documented, with performance notes and feedback guiding the selection of an “optimal” weight—one that feels challenging yet controlled and supports proper technique. The recommended weight is then highlighted in the chart and becomes the reference point for future programming.
The SCP also includes space for trainer notes and observations, such as limited range of motion, asymmetries, or mobility constraints. These notes help users adapt their programs to real-world limitations rather than forcing themselves into generic templates. For home exercisers, the protocol provides a simple, printable framework that can be attached to any existing routine; for professionals, it serves as a standardized intake and reassessment form that can be integrated into independent programs, classes, or clinic-based strength services.
“From the outset, NorthStar was built on the idea that exercise science should be more available to people,” said J. A. White, CEO of NorthStar Advanced Exercise Science. “Releasing the Strength Calibration Protocol to the broader public is a small way we stay true to our principles. If someone is training at home with a small set of dumbbells, they should still have access to a safe, intelligent way to choose their weights. We want what we have learned to benefit the fitness community as a whole, not only NorthStar clients.”
By releasing the Strength Calibration Protocol for open use, NorthStar aims to lower the barrier to safe strength training for people who may not have access to a personal trainer or structured system. The protocol is system-agnostic: it can be applied to bodyweight-only routines, dumbbell sets in a living room, garage gyms, or full commercial facilities. Once baseline weights are established, they can serve as a consistent reference when adding new exercises, adjusting training intensity, or resuming training after breaks.
The SCP is available in a format suitable for:
